Blog

When I was a hobbyist, my website started as a cake decorating blog, describing my adventures in cake decorating.

I still consider my job to be a bit of an adventure – dare I say it doesn’t feel like work – and many of my cakes tell a bit of a story.  I am delighted that a number of my customers are happy for me to share their cakes and the stories behind their creation.  So if there is a project that I have been working on that I think you might find interesting, or if I’ve been out and about, you can read about it here.

I also update my Facebook page frequently so visit my page www.facebook.com/debsmakescakes if you want to know what I have been up to or where I will be at upcoming events.

Raffi Rhino Cake

The one with a baby Rhino

When I got asked by my old friend Ms H to do her 40th birthday cake, I knew exactly what was coming next: could you do a Rhino? My answer: Hell yes! But no red velvet cake, OK? (In my opinion, this should be a rule. When the time comes to cut and serve an […]

Evangeline-8

The one I made with Mama Rhu

At my first cake competition, I wandered around the Excel centre in total awe of most of the entries. There was one exhibit in particular which stood out for me – a girl in a poodle skirt sitting on a diner stool. I had never seen anything like it and it’s still one of my […]

Peaches and Green Floral Wedding Cake

The ones that went to Birmingham

33This past weekend was Cake International at the N.E.C. in Birmingham. This is a big show; the Cake International competition area is billed as the world’s largest cake competition. So when I say this weekend’s competition was big, please understand that it was H U G E. There were 204 entries in the wedding cake […]

The ones to catch me up

It has been a very long time since my previous post. I can’t even think how long ago it was since I sat down in front of a blank screen, with the MS Word cursor blinking at me, waiting for the words to come. A lot has happened since I made those cookies for Fran’s […]

Fran Cookies-4

The ones that weren’t cake but cookies

In January this year I did a 5-day master class at the Cake Parlour in Wimbledon. Of those 5 days, we must have spent about 2 days doing iced cookies. At the time, I think I was a little peeved as I would have rather spent the time learning more about cakes or sugar flowers. […]

Tree Frog & Frangipani cake

The one that used the Cake Dutchess tutorial

If you follow my Facebook page, you will probably know that I have a small cake crush on Etty the Cake Dutchess. She has an amazing Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/WeddingCakesUK?fref=ts ) and her tutorials are all in one handy place on Pintrest (www.pinterest.com/dutchesscake).  On top of that, she is a really nice person and shared my fb […]

Diner Cake

The one with the teeny tiny diner things

Mini modelling is something I’ve wanted to try for ages.  I have decided that I’m going to Cake International in Birmingham in November (http://www.cakeinternational.co.uk/birmingham/2014/) but I still haven’t quite decided which class or classes I’m going to enter.  I really like the idea of doing a small decorative exhibit but I have zero experience of […]
